Back in the 1800’s, Gunbroker and the like didn’t exist. What did exist were gun dealers. Today they would be known as arms traffickers and the government would be all over them. The largest dealer in the mid to late 1800’s was Shuyler, Hartley, and Graham. The principals that founded SH&G in 1854 were Jacob Schuyler, Marcellus Hartley, & Malcom Graham. Think of them as the older version of Nicolas Cage in Lord of War. The U. S. Government confiscated the Fenians weapons during and after the 1870 raids. These weapons consisted of primarily the Needham Converted guns. Unlike in 1866 when the government returned to the Fenians their guns this time they did not. The government not only took the guns from the raids they also raided the “Secret Location”. They found not only more Needhams but also parts and partially assembled ones. All of this was taken. After being stored for a while the guns were then put up for auction.
The winner of most of the weapons was Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham. The guns that were partially assembled were put together by the dealer and sold along with all the others. Today, there is really is no way of knowing which of the Needhams were actually shipped to participate in the raids and which ones were put together by the SH&G gunsmith. I have read there are some with a cartouche that would indicate the SH&G gunsmith but I would have to do more research on this.
Numbers are only counted if there is an invoice with a year-end journal or just a year end journal entry.
Stand-alone invoices are not counted toward the total of Needhams sent out.
This section is being updated constantly as more info. becomes available.
